Dr Lesley Houghton

Lesley A Houghton is a Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Physiological Sciences, University of Manchester and Manager of the GI Physiological Services, Neurogastroenterology Unit, South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. 

She graduated with a special honors degree in Biochemistry and Physiology at the University of Sheffield (1983), and following a period of research at the University of Adelaide, South Australia gained a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield (1988). 

At national level Dr Houghton serves as Chairperson of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) (2007-present), and is a member of BSG Committee for the development of evidence based guidelines on Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 

At an international level, she is on the Editorial Board of the peer review journal 'Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology' and 'World Journal of Gastroenterology', a Council and Executive Member of the Functional Brain Gut Research Group (2006-present), member of the management committee for the international peer-review Journal Neurogastroenterology and Motility (2006-present) and member of the International Rome III Working Team to develop criteria for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders. 

She is an advisor and serves on speaker bureaus to a number of pharmaceutical companies, a Fellow of the Institute of Biology, member of a number of societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association, Physiological Society, European Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society, and reviewer for a number of international journals, The Wellcome Trust, MRC and NIH (USA).

She has authored or co-authored over 75 original publications, reviews and book chapters, and has given lectures at major national and international conferences.
