Professor Whorwell gained his degree in medicine at Guy's Hospital in London and was also awarded a degree in biochemistry at the University of London.

After working towards being a hospital doctor in London, Cambridge and Southampton he worked for a year in the USA to extend his experience before returning to Southampton to complete his training and gain further qualifications.

He was appointed as a consultant in Manchester in 1981 and subsequently promoted to Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Manchester working at Wythenshawe and Withington Hospitals.

His particular interest is in irritable bowel syndrome and related conditions and he has built up the South Manchester Functional Bowel Service which is devoted to looking after these patients as well as undertaking research into these illnesses.

Professor Whorwell has published over 280 papers or chapters in his field of interest as well as frequently writing for popular magazines and newspapers in addition to appearing on radio and television. He serves on a large number of advisory panels and was involved with the development of the NICE guidelines on IBS.
